PlaceLab's mission is to explore the interplay between urban environments and human behavior through research, with a focus on applying these insights in practical contexts. We have a special interest in studying unconventional public spaces and integrating both qualitative and quantitative aspects into our research and design practices. In response to the evolving complexity and multi-dimensional nature of modern city centers, traditional approaches are no longer sufficient. The amalgamation of buildings, programs, and transportation modes has given rise to novel building types and public spaces. To comprehend the intricate nature of this contemporary urban fabric, urban design research and practice must evolve by integrating data-driven and performance-based design approaches. Throughout this process, our goal is to nurture urban designers and scholars capable of effortlessly integrating research and design, thereby propelling innovation in contemporary urban design practices and policies.

Jae Min Lee is an associate professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Engineering at Yonsei University. He has research interests in non-conventional and underground public space, ecological modeling of cities and regions, and bridging the gap between quantitative and qualitative research traditions in urban design. He is an emerging scholar at the PENN Institute for Urban Research and an external faculty collaborator at the Center for Environmental Building & Design, University of Pennsylvania. He has worked in a range of city building projects as an urban design associate in both Chicago and New York offices at Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill LLP.
